Default Changing Straight Quotes and Apostrophes into Curly Ones

I need to replace straight quote marks with curly ones, and straight apostrophes with curly ones. I know how to use the Replace function. The problem is, I somehow messed up because now my closing quote is a curly apostrophe. and I cannot recall what I did last.

I selected a straight quote and pasted it into the Find box.

Then I typed a quote into the Replace box and hit Replace All. That replaced both the opening and closing quotes with curly quotes. All of the apostrophes were still straight.

Next, I selected one of the straight apostrophes and pasted it into the Find box.

Then I typed an apostrophe (at least I think I typed an apostrophe but I may have typed a quote) into the Replace box and pressed Replace All.

Finally, I saved the document.

Now I find that the although the opening quote and the apostrophes are curly, all the the closing quotes are curly apostrophes, and I just can't figure out where I went wrong.

How can I change the curly apostrophe into a straight apostrophe without changing the closing quote?

Can somebody please point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!
