Default
Word may be in Compatibility mode when you open documents created in an earlier version of Word. It is thus a per-document attribute; you can't simply turn it off. To exit it for a given document, you need only re-save the document in the latest format - which you can do via File|Info|Compatibility Mode>Convert before saving.
