If you mean the '¤'symbols, they're a table's end-of-cell or end-of-row marker. Doubtless, when you click anywhere in that area, Word's 'Table Tools' ribbon displays. You can delete the unwanted content via Table Tools>Layout>Delete, then choosing 'Delete Rows' or 'Delete Table', as appropriate.
