Default Recent Documents don't open from Taskbar/RightClick

I'm using Word 2019 with Windows 10. I have a Word icon on my taskbar.

When I right-click on this icon a list of recently-edited documents is displayed, but if I click any of these I get message: -
The item you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed, or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list? [Cancel][Delete]
However if I open Word by left-clicking this icon, or from an open Word document click the Open menu, the Open dialog displays the same list of recently-edited documents: I can click any of the items in the list and this time they open normally.

How do I fix this problem so that they also open from taskbar/right-click?
