Default Single word file not saving, freezes word

Hi guys new to the forum as I'm normally pretty self sufficient in office but this one has totally stumped me. I've got a word file from a colleague (resent multiple times and I've tried this on a macbook pro and imac, not a PC yet) and I can open the file but as soon as I try and save it or make any edits I get the rainbow wheel of death and word quits. I can open and save all of my other word files and ones received from all other people I communicate with so I'm not sure if there is some weird formatting/permissions on the other person's end or mine. This kind of reminds me of when there was the old .doc to .docx switch where if you were outdated you couldn't open the .docx files at all and ran into all sorts of issues, but I'm totally updated (v16.16.2 Office 365 subscription through a university) and haven't had any real issues with word versions since those old days. The only other strange thing that may be a clue is the style of the word files on my desktop. All of my files are a blank white sheet with the cover page of text and the DOCX on the bottom while the file in question appears to be the (I think older) version with generic grey "text" lines and the blue word symbol in the bottom left. I can change the file name if I double click on the file but as soon as I try and save from within word it freezes. The file is decently large (12.2mb) but I can't imagine that is causing this issue. The only thing I came across online was potentially an issue with the template but it is currently normal.dotm.
