Default Panic Adding slide numbers to master

OK, I've been powerpoint for years, but can't figure out this simple problem. Using 2007, can't get slide numbers on every slide. Went to master layout, then to the very top "super master" (whatever it's called). The help file says to add a placeholder, then add what you want. I can't, the "add placeholder" command is grayed out for the top one. I don't want to add one for each slide type, but it appeared I had no choice. Went to the layout slide I used the most and started there. Added a placeholder, type text. Then I went to insert tab and inserted "slide number". Looks fine on the master layout slide...but nothing appears on the actual slides. Blank. Nada.

Shouldn't be this hard. I have a presentation in an hour and am directed to have slide numbers.

help!
