Default 300dpi Images inserted as thumbnail size

Hi all.

I'm having annoying issues with Word. When I try to insert a 300dpi image into a Word document it inserts itself as a kind avatar/thumbnail size, but there seems no rhyme or reason as to why it does so. I have included pics of the problem (left pic), and how the photo should be inserted (right pic).

The picture I'm inserting on the left is 300x394pixels, 300dpi, 24 bit depth.
The other one is reduced to 96dpi.

The thing is that I have resized the image elsewhere so it is the right size for the book I'm writing (I've tried various software), which goes completely out of the window when it gets inserted. The same happens with bmps. I don't want to drag the image to the right size, as I then don't know what happens to it regarding quality etc. There must be a way around this?

Any help much appreciated!

NB. It doesn't matter whether I check or uncheck the compress images option. And it's the same for all documents!
