sentence highlights in black & I can't edit

Hi - I'm new here. Still on an old version of word. Just changed to a new computer + win 10, from win 7. When I open a document to edit, the sentence will highlight in black buwi8nt I can't edit. Protection is not on. Any ideas? thanks!
