Hi Jay,
If you're using Word's in-built multi-level list numbering tool (paragraph tab, 3rd item from left, with the 1, 1.1, 1.1.1, etc option), this is all automatic - you'd have to uncheck the 'Restart list after' option to stop it working.
Assuming you are using Word's in-built multi-level list numbering, you can check that the 'Restart list after' option is enabled by selecting, say a 2nd-order paragraph (eg numbered 1.2), then clicking on the multi-level list numbering icon, followed by 'define new multi-level list', then 'More'. The 'Restart list after' option should be checked and the restart level should be the previous one up the hierarchy.
If you're using Word's Heading Styles, the principles are the same - select a paragraph with, say, the Heading 2 Style then apply the steps in the previous paragraph.
