If you only looked in the Styles Gallery on the Home tab, that is only a list of styles which have been designated to show in the Gallery. Most styles are not there.

What happens if you use the Apply Style dialog (Ctrl+Shift+S) and type in the style name?

You can view all styles in a document using the Styles Pane. You get this by clicking on the styles dialog launcher in the bottom right corner of the Styles group on the Home Tab. Then, when that pane shows up, use the Options (bottom right) to show all styles.
