Default Different Odd/Even Header with no header on first page of new chapters

I'm using Word 2016 on a Windows 10 laptop. I am formatting a book to go to a printer, and I am definitely NOT expert with Microsoft Word. I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with some step-by-step instructions on how to do what I need to do.

I have a page number as m footer, which appears on every page. I have different headers on the Odd and Even pages. On the first page of each new chapter (and a few other pages), I don't want the header to appear. I understand about making section breaks at the end of each chapter. I also have some understanding of choosing Different Odd & Even Pages, and Different first page. But I can't seem to get it to work the way I need it to. I might need to start with doing the header on the even page (page 2), then go back to page one and create it, then tell it different first page. But I don't really know, nor do I have a clear understanding of exactly what I'm doing.

I did come to an understand a few books ago that when I have (essentially) three different headers (Odd, Even, and Different first page), that I also have three different footers, but so far, that hasn't caused a problem.

Are there any templates anywhere that exist in the format I need that I can use to start each new book (for the header/footer situation)?

Is there anyone out there who can give me step-by-step instructions for how to set up my document? If I had that, I would be able to refer back to it every time.

Thanks in advance to anyone who is able to help. I will be eternally grateful.

Barbara
