Default Altering Column Widths on Two Col Page

I'm asking because perhaps I've set off in the wrong direction in the first place and because what I googled doesn't work.

I had a narrow photo inserted in the document and it took a little less than half the width of the page.

So I thought I might fill the other half with text.

So I selected the photo and about an equal amount of text and selected 'two column' and lo and behold, I got two columns.

Would have been perfect it if had been only text, but it was meant to be a table so I set to work tabbing and spacing to get the stuff lined up and make a table of it.

And it was just too wide. Just a bit too wide.

So I googled and found 'select the column and use the column markers to change the width'.

And I selected the column and I found the column markers and I was able to move them though it didn't work smoothly. So I selected the photo column and reduced the size of the photo and attempted to reduce the size of that column so's I could increase the size of the other....

and so on...

and I've been unable to achieve success...

Perhaps I'm going about it the wrong way?
