Have you tried repairing Office (Word Options|Resources|Diagnose)? When sending from Word, is your internet connection already open, or is your system configured so that it will open in such circumstances? Are you sure your Outlook smtp parameters are correctly specified for the gmail connection (See http://www.outlook-tips.net/index.html for the particulars, plus other details you might need to check).
