no. not similar. ost files are part of outlook database. copying them directly makes them useless. their content turns inaccessible. if you need to transfer them safely to a drive "safely" offline, converting them to pst is the only way out. either export them directly to pst through outlook or you could buy any good third party tool to convert the ost files to pst.
