Specifically, you are looking at the element of paragraph formatting called "Indents."

Generally, in a numbered list, one wants the numbers offset from the text, including text that follows on other lines before the next number.

Automatic numbering in Word is deceptively complex. For anything other than the simplest document, it is generally best done attached to styles as described in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly.
