Click in a word that is showing up as misspelled. Then press Shift+F1.
Fair enough, tried this. Unsurprisingly, the language associated with the problematic words is indeed French. But that does not really help me - why is it French and, more importantly, how can I make sure the entire document is treated as an English document as far as spell-checking is concerned?
