Much can be done using the Replace feature, often replacing with nothing.
Spacing issues: Vertical spacing should be addressed with paragraph styles. Horizontal spacing with Tables, Indents and Tabs. Empty paragraphs should not be used to space. These concepts are explained and explored in Shauna's articles.
