Default Word 2016 saves different versions of file in different folders

I'm working in Word 2016 and Windows 10 (64) on a Thinkpad T470.
I have always thought that c:\Users\myname\Documents was the same folder as ThisPC\Documents.
Now I find that Word is saving different versions of my documents in the former, not identical to the ones saved in the latter. I would like to use the latter choice as my default saving location for files; it won't allow this. It uses the Users location, rigid as always, but I'm totally confused by two different files existing at these two locations. If the locations are different, why can't I choose the one I want, the one that's simple for me to reach through File Explorer?
I've looked up how to set file locations to my preference but no one mentions this strange set of circumstances. Am I missing something obvious? It wouldn't be the first time--please help.
