Like Paul, I'm baffled by "last cursor history."
I have no problem using Alt+Left Arrow to go back along a trail of hyperlinks within a document. When a hyperlink takes me outside of a document, I have to return to the document, itself, manually. Once there, the Alt+Left Arrow works.

If this is not your experience, try opening Word in safe mode and see whether your experience is different.
