Default position large pictures in word

I have a document with a number of large pictures, and by "large" I mean each pictures takes up half a page or more. I would like to position these so that the picture goes generally with the associated text, but so that the text flows above or below the picture as necessary to keep the pages full. But anything I do, Word seems to insist that I tie the picture to a paragraph, and then if the picture and the paragraph don't fit on the current page, it pushes both to the next page. Which means that unless I pick a paragraph that is on the top of the page, the whole thing gets pushed to the next page, and so I get half the page blank. Like say I tie the picture to a paragraph that is half-way down page 10. So Word says, "Oh, this paragraph and the picture don't all fit on the page, so I push the paragraph and the picture to page 11, and leave the bottom half of page 10 blank." Is there any way to say no, just let the picture go on the next page so that you don't leave half a page blank? I can, I suppose, carefully choose the right paragraph to attach the picture to so that everything will land right, but then if I add or delete any text, everything breaks.
