Default Documents getting longer?!

Hey, all.

Okay--I thought I knew Word pretty well, been using it for years--but I have a real pain of a problem that I just can't fix, so's I'm humbly turning to you geniuses to see if you will please help me. (Seriously--PLEASE. )

I'm a screenwriter, so the formatting of my documents is pretty important, as is their length. Lately, however, something screwy has been happening--my documents are getting longer, for no apparent reason.

For example: I'll write a script, 56 pages. I'll save it, and even turn it to a PDF (also 56 pages). However I'll open the Word document to edit/alter it in a week or so, and now--suddenly--it's 57 pages.

I'll look down over it, and where--in the previous version (and still apparent in the PDF)--a sentence will fit on the end of a page, now--for no apparent reason--it won't, and it will only fit on the top of the following page. In essence, pages are getting shorter.

I've no idea why this happens. I'm not changing anything in the formatting, at least not deliberately...and it's murder because I now can't edit documents without them automatically becoming far too long. I've tried turning off compatibility mode, but that seems to make documents even longer still--I'm gaining a page for every ten I had before!

I use Word 2016. Any ideas, please?! I'm going nuts, here!
