If it's a problem with the text box itself, which it sounds like, make sure it is formatted with text-wrapping set as In line, rather than Around. If this is not the problem, you might try formatting your text with a fill color, instead of using the text box. you can extend the color above and below by using a paragraph border the same color as the fill color, and adding space between the border and text.
