This does not work with Documents (or backup locations) on OneDrive. It does however work happily with Word 2016 using local folders.

However and more to the point, you asked about versioning. http://www.gmayor.com/SaveVersionsAdd-In.htm will work with One Drive and includes a version for Excel also.

I used "Save In Two Places Ver 2.4.dotm".
With Save In Two Places Ver 2.4.dotm, Word crashed.
This was my method: I opened the Word doc from a local folder, and the "second place" was OneDrive.

I think I will try SaveVersionsAdd-In
