Default Locking number of days in a project

Hi all

I have a project lasting 140 days (140 days worth of work) however as each activity doesn't start at the end of the previous activity, in that there may be a 3 week gap between activity 1 and activity 2, the actual 'gap' between start and end data is more like 200 days....

Is there a way to lock the 140 days of activity while having the ability to flex the gap between activities, without causing the project length to change (lengthen).

Thank you in advance.
