Here's a simpler way:
1. Select the table of contents container and press Shift-F9. You should now see the table of contents field, which will look something like:
{ TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u }
2. Insert a space character before the table of contents heading
3. Select the table of contents heading and the entire table of contents field (not the space you added or the container) and copy them.
4. Delete the table of contents container
5. Paste the table of contents heading and field into the space where the table of contents container was.
Done.
