Exclamation Word converts section break to page break before columns, does not insert column breaks

I have two problems related to columns:

1. I want to convert a portion of text on a page into columns, without the rest of the text being converted to columns. When I select text and try to convert it to columns, Word inserts a page break, not a continuous section break, before the selected text. I have tried manually inserting a continuous section break but it converts this into a page break too. I've even tried manually inserting a page break, then a continuous section break before the page break, then deleting the page break, and when I do that the section break is converted to a page break. I want my column-ized text to be on the same page as the rest of my text but nothing seems to be working. I've worked with columns many times before and have been able to have column text on the same page as non-column text. Why isn't this working?

2. Once I do convert my text to columns (I've tried 2, 3, and 4), not only does the text appear on the next page (as described above), but it also appears with all the text in the first column. No text is wrapped to the next column. I've worked with columns many times before and this should be automatic, but it does not appear to be.

Though I have Word 2013 I am working in compatibility (word 2010) mode for this document, and that may have something to do with it. On the other hand I've tried cutting and pasting the text I want in columns to a new doc not in compatibility mode and the same two problems happen. Thanks to anybody who can help me with this!
