Default How To Stop a Mail Merge

From time to time we try to run a mail merge in Word, but the mail merge fields no longer match the column names in the associated spreadsheet. Word throws up a warning saying the fields don't match, and you can fix or cancel the page. Unfortunately Word throws up a warning for every field in hundreds of envelopes. I want to cancel the mail merge and go fix my documents. The cancel button on the warning dialogue box only cancels that one field. Is there a way to cancel the whole merge other than closing Word with the Task Manager?
