Default Why are Portrait mode JPG Images changed to landscape mode

Portrait format images no longer display properly when loaded into MS PowerPoint (PPS).
Image #1 – Taken last August in portrait orientation, this image formats properly.
Image #2 – Taken this February in portrait orientation, this image does notformat properly. Instead of displaying in portrait mode, the image is rotated 90 degrees to the left and fills the entire space in landscape mode. Attempts to correct the problem in PowerPoint failed.
Image #3 - Ditto
No software changes made to PPS between the two dates.
Some camera options changes were made which, when reversed, failed to correct the problem.
A comparison of the detailed metadata shows the two images to be identical.
The images display properly with all other JPG viewers/editors.
