Default Outlook: Problem with Gmail synchronizing folders

I have Outlook (OL) 2016 as part of Office 365 yearly subscription. I'm quite pleased with it but every once in a while I have a problem with it and Gmail. OL is configured with 2 accounts: Verizon.net and Gmail.com. It's been running fine for quite a while but the problem is that sometimes when you do a Send/Receive All Folders, the progress box appears and there are 4 tasks. Receiving and sending for Vz, sending for Gm and Synchronizing subscribed Gm folders (including Inbox). What happens is it gets stuck on the Sync folders while the other 3 tasks complete. Usually the Sync task will show its own progress bar and how many seconds remain, but when its stuck nothing happens. It either times out or I manually cancel that task. But of course no new e-mails show up in the Inbox.

When this last happened I went to the Gmail web site and everything there worked properly. And OL had been working perfectly all afternoon up until it started to get stuck on the Sync. I think this happened once before and it seemed to fix itself after a while so I kept trying but no joy. In frustration I rebooted my PC and when it came back OL started working correctly.

I always thought it was a problem at Google's end but if a reboot cured it then something happened with OL.

Has anyone seen anything like that and if so is there a fix other than rebooting?

Thanks,
Gerry
