have you tried to look at the size of the datafile? I had a problem similar to this in the past and found out that the max size for a datafile (*.pst) is 2gb if this limit is passed most functions seize to work.

you can verify the size by right clicking on the top level folder (ex. outlook today) and select properties and then folder size to see the actual folder size, if it is near or over 2gb then that may be the reason why your PC is freezing.

if this is the case you should create a new datafile (under menu "file>New>outlook datafile") and transfer some of the contents in the existing file to the new one.

hope that this is of help.
