It is not on the view tab. It is in the Word options for display.

This is a toggle control. In at least one version of Word, it was toggled by a single errant mouse click. These days it takes a double-click. Otherwise, it can be found in the Word options.

It is my guess that this is your problem. If I am mistaken, please write back.
