I've done this in the past by creating a macro that runs as you exit the checkbox field.
You can bookmark the area that gets hidden/shown. The macro then sets that area as hidden if the checkbox is empty and visible if not.

Nowdays, I use Content Controls instead of ActiveX checkboxes but the principle is the same.
