Default Loss of "Save as PDF" function

I allowed an Adobe update on October 10th without paying much attention to it. When I next went to save a document as PDF, I was relayed to an Adobe website and asked to subscribe to Acrobat Pro.

I removed Acrobat Pro and found that the Save as PDF function no longer worked at all. (I received a "Could not open file" error.)

I went and downloaded Acrobat Reader DC and can now Save as PDF, but no longer have the options to prevent file compression. Those options are simply not available in Word anymore. As such, my PDF sizes have dropped from ~1.25 MB to 321 KB and the documents look awful.

Is there a way to restore this function? It seems odd to me that a major aspect of Word is tied to a 3rd party.

Any help or advice will be appreciated!
