Default why is there a space before my citation numbers and how do I get rid of it

I am adding reference citations to a paper written in MS word 2010, 32-bit. The citation numbers are supposed to be superscript. When I add a reference, the citation number always has a space before it that I can't get rid of. This looks bad, especially in a comma separated list of references.

I have never understood why word does these formatting things that can't be changed easily. References are always set up in a very specific format that needs to be adhered to if the paper is to be accepted. For this reason, there should never be anything about a reference format that can't be changed.

Is there some obscure way to change how these citation numbers are formatted?
