Default Outline Problem

Is there a way to remove all formatting, such as auto numbering for a list, so that I can indent as I please? I need to be able to judge my own hanging indents. How can I do the following?

I am working in Word 2007, but must save in Word 2003.

There is an existing format that I must follow in editing a legal document. And I need to be able to do hanging indents (or hard left indents) under each item.

Example.

A. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

B. bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

The example doesn't come through on preview well, so I'll explain. An explanation follows A. that must be indented as is item A. and it can run several lines. That follows for each item. How can I do this. Word seems to want to do it its way, I want it done my way!
