Next step:

- Removed Office 2010 completely
- Cleared out the registry of Office leftovers
- Rebooted
- Installed Office 2016.

Problem with the letter spacing reappaered.

So the moment i install 2016 "and don't use the ClearType font setting", the letter spacing is all messed up.
Back to square one... :-(
