Default Conditional Line Numbering?

I have a spreadsheet that is an master enrollment form for an event. As I add attendees I would basically like to index numbers in a column called "Headcount" which is Column G. Since the names are listed in Col. A under each attendee's local organization I can't just count the number of entries in Column A. However, I do have Column D, which is their email address, and that can be used for counting. So the formula in Column G would look something like this:

"If column D has an entry in it count this line as 1"

Then that formula would add 1 to the number in the line above it and display the result.

I hope this request is understandable and the function is possible. Please ask any question that will help with the understanding. I think this request is fairly simple for someone who is an advanced Excel user. It's just above my head. I tried find it in the Formulas section and didn't see anything that look appropriate.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.
