Default Windows 10 OneNote vs. MS Office 2010 OneNote

This is just a curiosity question that perhaps someone could explain for me.

It's a long story but I was using EverNote instead of OneNote on my PC, my laptop, my android phone and my Nexus tablet. All was well until yesterday when I leaned that EverNote was limiting their free account to only 2 devices and the upgrade was too costly. So, since OneNote was available on my Android phone, I downloaded a copy and began experimenting with it yesterday. When I set OneNote up I tied it to my Hotmail.com email address where my OneDrive on both my Android Phone and PC are tied. After creating a few notes I went to my Windows PC running Windows 10 and I fired up the version of OneNote installed with Windows 10 however when prompted to enter my associated email address (aka my Hotmail.com address) OneNote came back and said "This type of account doesn't work with this service". I then went out to my copy of Office 2010, installed OneNote and that version of OneNote worked just fine with my Hotmail.com account.

So my question is why did my older Office 2010 version of OneNote work with my Hotmail account but the version that came with Windows 10 did not? To me it makes no difference which version of OneNote I'm using as the most important thing is that it works and I can share notes between my PC, my laptop, my Android phone and my Nexus tablet but I thought it strange that this newer version would not work as I thought it would. Can anyone explain why? Thanks.
