Thank you, Paul, for that excellent tutorial on Font Book investigation.
Since opening this thread, I've discovered that part of the problem lies in a peculiarity with Photoshop Elements in which glyphs contained in .otf fonts can't be pasted into a .psd document that isn't created with the full version of Photoshop. I've not been able to find an Appleton .ttf, so I'll have to solve that in another way.
That's not an issue for this forum, of course, but I am still baffled by why an .otf font that's in my Font Book and validates okay won't work in Word. Knowing how to check for a damaged font is news to me and I really appreciate the help.
