Default Appendix page number or level 10

I know there are only 9 levels in Word. What I want to do is use H1 through H5 for five levels in the body of the document. It would appear as 1.1, 1.1.2, etc.

When the document gets to the appendix I would like to use A.1.1.1.1. I can only get to the 4th level using Heading 9.

Is there no way to get that fifth level in the appendix?

Hi DALogan,

You can edit the multilevel list numbering for heading 6 so that the previous 5 heading levels are not incorporated into the numbering.

Default not sure how to do that

I am using heading 1 - 5 for the main body and 6 - 9 for the appendix. heading 6 has a frame and then after you press enter another frame appears with the letter of the appendix. For example, in the first appendix after the body, use heading 6, get big bold letters saying this is the appendix, press enter, and the letter A appears, enter again and you start with the body of the apendix. that leaves me with heading 7, 8, 9 to only do 3 levels within the appendix.

True. If you're prepared to re-assign heading levels 2-6 to 3-7, thus freeing up level 2, you could reserve that for the appendix headings and giving you the same heading sets for both the body and appendices - including levels 8 & 9 should the need arise.

Thumbs down

Well, that is an interesting suggestion. My challenge is that 1-5 need to have 1.1.1.1.1 and the appendix heading 6-9(10) need to have A.1.1.1.1.

I don't want to use the same headings for the body and the appendix because I want to use numbers for the body and letters for the appendix.

Hi DALogan,

The alternative I suggested wouldn't really allow you to have both numbering systems.
