Default Table of contents: Hyperlinking

Can you automatically hyperlink the TOC to the heading?

Yes - that's how they work by default.

Ah! Then in addition to macros not recording properly my TOC is not automatically hyperlinked to the headings it was created from.

Again, is this because I'm using a trial 2011 version? Still well within 30d.

I doubt it has anything to do with the trial - maybe the installation is faulty.

Did you use Ctrl-Click to active the hyperlink, or have you configured Word so that's not necessary?

Yes, have tried Control (it triggers a pop-up copy/cut/paste window), cmd, alt, nothing works and the TOC shows no sign that it is hyerlinked.

As mentioned, completely separately I tried recording a simple macro and found that 'select all' commands were recorded but not the 'find/replace'. So something odd is occurring.

OK, in your TOC, select one of the page #s and press Shift-F9. You should see something like:
{PAGEREF _Toc298941567 \h}
If the \h isn't there, that means your TOC has been created without the hyperlink switch for the page #s.

Likewise, if you select the whole TOC and press Shift-F9. You should see something like:
{TOC \h}
If the \h isn't there, that means your TOC has been created without the hyperlink switch for the headings.

If the \h switches are present and hyperlinking isn't working, you've definitely problems with that aspect of the application also.

Shift+F9 don't pull that info on my Powerbook because they're locked to other functions.

However, I've been a duffer. The 'page numbers' ARE hyperlinked. I'm used to OO Writer where the whole heading is hyperlinked in blue; can this be done?

And can you automatically update the TOC when new headings are added?

For updating the TOC, Ctrl-A, F9 should update all fields in the body of the document, including cross-references, hyperlinks and the TOC.

As for the TOC format, you could format its Styles as blue underlined text. They won't change colour like regular hyperlinks when clicked on, though.

Just 1 last Q. Been into 'Styles' but I can't see anywhere you could have the whole of the 'heading' within the TOC hyperlinked, ie. so that you can click anywhere on the TOC text rather than just the page number. Can you do the former?

hi Tays,

Shift-F9 or Alt-F9 (Cmd-F9 on a Mac) should reveal the field codes, for a standard TOC field, the code should look like:
{TOC}
simply add a hyperlink switch to the field code, so you end up with:
{TOC \h}
Then press F9 to update the field. If you used Alt-F9/Cmd-F9 to reveal the field code, press it again to show the output.

Note: adding the \h switch doesn't affect the TOC's appearance - only its behaviour.

adding the '\h' didn't appear to change the hyperlinking, ie. the 'finger-pointing white hand' only appears over the page number and clicking only takes you to the hyperlink over ~40% of the line from the R-hand side.
