Default Change the default REF switch

Is there any way to change the default cross reference switch

from
\h

to
\# 0 \h

?

I am trying to find a way to force word to put just the number for cross referenced item and not the caption or label. I have to change all the cross referenced fields manually.

Thanks

thanks Paul for your reply.

Do you know why changing "\h" to "\# 0 \h" to the cross-referencing for the equation does not work at all? This method works for Figures and Tables and remove the label and caption from the cross-referencing but it does not work for the equations to remove the brackets from around the number.

Hi b0x4it,

Cross-references to Equation captions work the same as for others. However, I don't understand your reference to brackets 'around the number' - that's not something I see when I insert either an Equation, an Equation caption or an Equation caption cross-reference.

Hi Paul,

All the captions for the equations need to be with bracket: (1)
so once I put the caption I manually add brackets around it. From now on, word consider ( as label and ) as caption. Now I do what exactly I do for Figure and Table: I put the cross referencing with selected option "Only label and number", and then I replace \h with \# 0 \h. This method works perfectly for Figures and Tables, but when I do it for equations, nothing changes and it just shows (1 that is Only label and number. What can I do to remove those two brackets?

what I found is that when I insert an equation caption, Word create just 1. Now if I put a cross-reference to this caption, word create a bookmark to the 1 and this is what you said that there is no bracket. But interestingly, if I add brackets around 1 -> (1) and put another cross-referencing followed by Ctrl+A and F9, Word automatically created two other bookmarks one for (1) and the other one for (1 .
No if I want to have a cross referencing to just 1, the solution that adds \# 0 does not works anymore and the only way is to update one of those bookmarks and change it from (1 to just 1. Am I right? If so, I think manually adding a bookmark to the caption number and the cross-referencing that bookmark is the much straight forward solution (as I told you before). Are these all correct?

Thanks

Hi b0x4it,

I think someone needs to stop trying to make Word a pseudo-LaTeX application.

To change the Equation # format, select the # and press Ctrl-F9 to enclose in in another field (eg 'Equation { 1 }'). Then fill in/around the field braces so that you get:
'Equation {=1 \# (0)}'

Then, to get just the Equation #, without the brackets, format the REF field as {REF _Ref294160175 \# 0;0 \h }

Note: To be able to do this, you must insert the first cross-reference to the Equation before modifying the Equation # format.

Hi Paul

Many thanks for your reply.
I tried 'Equation {=1 \# (0)}' and found that it word and add brackets automatically, but the problem with it is that when I put a citation like this, it then does not show up in the cross-reference window. Word does not detect it as citation and I can not put a cross-reference to it. So I think it is impossible to use this method.

The problem with referencing equations was that when I put '\# 0' it shows -1 that I do not understand. but now by specifying 0;0 for both negative and positive it works properly, but it is really strange why doing such a simple task should be such complicated. I think Microsoft really need to reconsider the logic behind it.

Anyway, I really respect you Paul because having such knowledge and because of the time you spend to learn all these small but very important stuff and more importantly because of sharing them with others and helping them; thanks you.
