Keep with next and footnotes

Default Keep with next and footnotes

I have 4 lines of text that I want to stay together. The 3rd line has a footnote that is quite long, and the group of 4 lines is about 1/3 of a page from the bottom. As it is, the 4th line gets bumped to the next page. And if I try using keep-with-next, it puts all 4 lines on the next page. What I'd like to happen is to keep the 4 lines on the same page and have the footnote from the 3rd line truncate enough to make room for the 4th line and put the rest of the footnote at the bottom of the next page.

I'm sure there's a simple way of doing this, but I've tried several combinations and just can't figure it out.

thanks for any help

Hi nfactor,

Word's footnote algorithms work so as to keep both the footnote reference and as much as possible of the footnote on the same page. This is done at the expense of whatever else appears below the footnote reference.

Working within that limitation, what you could try is:
• move the footnote reference to the line that you want kept on the same page.
• Then, format that particular footnote reference as white text (which effectively prevents it printing); and
• where you originally had the the footnote reference, insert a cross-reference (via Insert|Cross-reference > formatted text) to the footnote.
