Default Section Problems

I have just started using some of the more advanced features of Word in a project to publish a book. I am making extensive use of sections to control headers and footers, page numbers etc.

I initially got things set up pretty much the way I wanted but any tiny change I make to sections completely messes things up.

For starters, deleting a section marker is impossible in anything but normal layout because the section markers can't be selected.

Next, I see section markers that say they are continuous and that's not want I want them to be. How on earth they got that way is another question because I certainly didn't set any section markers to be continuous. I double click on the section marker to change it to a different type and I see that the dropdown menu in the section dialog says it is Next Page or Even Page even though the section marker says it is continuous.

So now I decide to delete the section marker in normal layout view and insert a new one of the right type. Seems like everything worked fine. But then I look at the previous section marker to the one I just inserted and it is now magically changed to be a continuous. Return to the previous paragraph for a continuous loop.

Can anyone suggest how to get this 90+ page document with 30+ sections should look like, other than throwing this software out and buying a real word processor.

Hi phaworth,

Section breaks can usually be seen in the 'Print Layout' view, though they can be difficult to spot if they start at the very end of a line. Temporarily switching to 'Draft' view is sometimes necessary for that reason.

I understand your frustration with some Section breaks changing themselves to continuous. To re-set them, place the insertion point in the relevant section and then, in the Page Setup dialog box, change the "Section start" option. To display the dialog box, click the the arrow on the bottom right of the Page Setup group on the Page Layout tab.
