Default Setting numbering value in multilevel lists

Good day

I created a table for my equations just like in the blog below.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/microsoft_of...numbering.aspx

I need the equation to reflect the chapter number i.e. 1.1, 1.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and so on. But when I get to 3.1 and try to set the numbering value to 3.1 or any other number, I get a list containing the numbers that I skipped. So in one box I'll have 2, 3 and 3.1. If I set it to 3.3, I'll get 2, 3, 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3. I can't link the list to my headings as I'm using a different format for my chapter headings. Please I need help.

Best regards
