Default Older Word files corrupted?

My older microsoft word files with tables in them seem to be corrupted. All columns except the first one have disappeared. This is only true of files I made with older versions of Word. I have checked the files in an older computer and they are ok there. I imported those files to my present computer and the same thing happened. Presently I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OSX 10.6.4. My version of Microsoft Word is 11.5.6 (090722) running under Office 2004. I update Word whenever an update is available. I am not sure when this corruption happened, but I suspect that it was either with one of the updates, or when, recently, I needed to read a file sent to me by a colleague running the new version of Office, and I had to install some software (can't remember exactly what that was) to handle that task. How can I fix the files?
