Default Word 2019 began "Not Responding" a days ago when I try to save

I've been using Word 2019 for about three months. Suddenly, a few day ago it started having a problem saving work. Initially, it was this sequence:
1. Save my work to a local hard drive.
2. Save as my work on a flash drive.

The first worked fine. The second went into the "Not Responding" mode. I don't know if it is completing what I asked or remembering what I did. I never suggests recovering the second file.

I did not install anything new except maybe a FireFox update (they're incessant). I've been using MS Office since I had 1997-2003 on Windows XP in he 1990s. What might be wrong? I don't ever seen an error message. It just hangs and no matter how long I wait, it does not resume. Suggestions would be very appreciated. Office 2019 cost a lot to fail this badly this soon.

When within Word, you should act as if your flash drive does not exist!

You should do nothing in Word with a flash drive or its contents.

This is true for all versions of Word at least from Word 97 on. This is probably the easiest way to lose your work.

Charles' advice is perhaps a bit extreme. Yes, you risk losing you work if you save to a flash drive then don't use the 'safe removal' process before removing it, but it's quite safe if you do use that process. The problem was quite acute in the days of floppy disk drives but, now they've gone the way of the dinosaur, it's quite safe with multi-gigabyte USB drives of all persuasions.

Your "Not Responding" issue in this thread most likely concerns a USB drive whose contents have been corrupted by not going through the 'safe removal' process before removing it.

Thanks for your response. I have been working from and saving to a USB drive for a long time. That has not corrupted my files. I am on Windows 10 and this is a brand new problem.

However, I posted a new thread today about getting "Not responding" without a USB drive involved. My best guess is that it is the result of a new MS update.
