MS Word no longer gives me the little arrow option of going to the last place I edited the document
I have a new HP 64-bit laptop, running Windows 10 Home, 12gb memory, 2T hard drive.
I have MS Office 2013 and in the past, when I opened a Word document it would present a little box on the right hand side that I could click on and it would take me to the last place I was before closing the document. I loved that option. It was a real time saver. Now within the last few weeks, that has become hit or miss. It only shows up about 20% of the time. I've looked through the settings and didn't see anything that sounded like it would pertain to this. This has only started occurring in the last few weeks and I've had the laptop for a couple of months, so I don't really think it's the laptop, especially since it works sometimes. Is there a setting that I've missed in setting up this laptop? How can I get it to work like it used to? Thanks for your help. |

You can try pressing Shift+F5 which moves the insertion point to the most recent edit point.

MS Word no longer gives me the little arrow option
Thanks for this suggestion. It does work. But is there a way to get this to automatically happen, like it used to? I hate it when things that worked very well, and I liked, all of a sudden stop working.

I'm sorry. I know of no way to make this behave rationally. It is the same on my computer.

Thank you for the quote about Word. My laugh for the day. And thank you for helping me. Have a great day with less perplexity and more laughter. Guess we can close this question.

Can you identify a common denominator for the files where Resume Reading does not work? For example, are they all in some older file format, such as *.doc?
If there is no pattern, I suspect using Shift+F5 is the best you can do. :-(

No, I can't find anything that is common. Most of my files are docx. I've been working on a novel for a few months now and the option worked on it up until a few weeks ago. And now it no longer works. So that is on the very same document. It's a docx file. It's very aggravating, especially on a large document. I have another document that I open and/or update a couple of times a week. It's only about 8 pages long. I've used this document for a couple of years, it's a doc file and the option used to work on it but does not now. I just now opened about 20 documents, 5 or 6 doc files and the rest docx files and of the 20, only 5 still has the option working. Two are docx files and three are doc files. Things that make you say hmmmmm.

I think it only works if you actually made an edit and then saved the document. The next time you open it asks if you want "to go to where you left off". I think if you open and close with no changes and no save this function doesn't work.
After a couple of tests I also noticed this function doesn't work if you use the save as function to capture your changes. You need to open a document, make changes and save same document for it to work. |

Good points. That may be why I find it perplexing! |

Let me know if my observations are accurate.
Charles I'm definitely going to use your words "I know of no way to make this behave rationally". So true in so many situations. |
