Default Restrict save folder

Hello,

We have all word templates saved in one centralized folder:
ex Q:\company forms\maintenance.docx

The permissions within the document let people fill stuff out and the folder is protected so know can save over the top of the original document.

I am tired of everyone saving their documents wherever they please, can't find them, so I want a default place put in like:
ex G:\maintenance requests\?????.docx the name ????? is the name of request.

I am not sure how to lock this out

Thank you

The fundamental problem you're having is that you're calling documents templates. Files ending with a docx extension are not templates - they're documents.

The simplest solution is to open the documents and save them as templates. When you do that, Word will give them a dotx extension (don't simply change it yourself). Once you've done that, double-clicking on the template will cause Word to create a new document from it, obviating the issues you're now having.

  1. I agree 100%. Use Templates for templates! If you were doing that, Word would not be trying to save documents in your templates folder.
  2. Another option in Word is to set a default place to save documents. That place definitely should not be your templates folder. You can have it be the Documents folder. You can have sub folders by projects.
