Table of Contents - positioning in a document
Word 365 is giving me a nervous breakdown. All I want to do is put a TOC at the TOP of my document. I have my items tagged as header 1 and 2, the TOC generates fine.
But maddeningly, Word ignores where the cursor is (at the top of the document on a blank page) and inserts the TOC in the middle of some text on the LAST page. It has to be something stupid I'm doing, but I'm sure that Microsoft is "helping me". Any ideas? Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 02-04-2019 at 10:02 AM. Reason: Mark as solved |

Try pressing Ctrl+Home before you insert the TOC.

nope....
good idea though.. Cursor is at the top of the document, ctrl home did not move it, inserting TOC, we go back to page 9. maddening

I am assuming that you did the Ctrl+Home even if you were already at the top of the document.
Is your document protected in any way? |

Yes, I did (curious if the cursor would move). Protection - I don't think so. This doc is just a series of engineering notes I was pulling together. Silly me thought, "Hey, a TOC would be nice." There went my day Appreciate the help. If it matters, this is Office 365.

I don't see why not - nothing customer sensitive.

okay, seriously, the Charles' need lives. Brief update - it allows me to control X and move it to the top of the document. Still begs the question what the Microsoft retards were thinking...

They were not thinking anything. It works fine.
When you go to insert a TOC, it asks if you want to replace the current TOC. A "no" response puts it at your insertion point. A "yes" response puts it at the end of the document. |

What version of Office are you using? Because in my Word 365, there is no query as to where to put it.... now that I managed to move the table of contents to where I want it, the TOC is inserting at the cursor location now. whatever.... |
